Museu Nacional do Azulejo

(National Tile Museum)

The museum in housed in the former Madre de Deus convent, which was built in 1509.
The Azulejo
“Azulejo” sounds like the Portuguese word for blue, “azul,” but it is actually derived from the Arabic word for “polished stone.”
These tiles make up a huge panoramic depiction of Lisbon before it was flattened by an earthquake in 1755.
